Mr Gundy was a local, and well known, vagabond who lived in Shoebury in the mid to late 1800's. He had a worked for (?) the Knapping family (Lords of the Manor) who built him a house on the beach made of an upturned boat, which he lived in for years until he died.

The name of Gundy is still a locally known name, but has also been corrupted to Cundy. There are many people with either of these names still living in the town, and many of them descended from Mr Gundy himself as he is known to have had at least 9 children.

We met with local author Judith Williams who educated us with many stories of Shoebury and Foulness. This is just one of them and we'd like to know more about this local character.
